Defense Minister Barak criticized a group of soldiers that lifted a protest banner during their swearing-in ceremony near the Western Wall. Specifically, the soldiers expressed opposition to the 2005 evacuation of the Homesh settlement.  The Jerusalem post quotes Barak:

“Freedom of expression is a cornerstone of democracy,” he said, calling on those assembled to “exercise national responsibility” and distinguish between freedom of expression and subversive behavior which threatens to weaken both “the army and the state.”

Where does democracy begin and end in such government institutions that are hiearchial, and authoritarian in nature?
